Beautiful Bernkastel

Slow start this morning as the ship didn’t dock until 11am. We sat at the front of the ship and observed going into a lock.

This was a 5am one that Donna saw.
Fascinating to watch the crew in action as the lock filled with water.
Lock walls behind us!

To explore Bernkastel, we split into three groups. Team Danny and Donna created their own tour of the town and still overtook the ‘white walkers’. Team Mark and Madonna did the guided walk of the town and Team Wayne and Ann walked up to the castle.

Team Danny and Donna

Weather was a bit drizzly but that didn’t stop us.
Memorable buildings
Danny and Donna enjoying a coffee

Team Mark and Madonna

Grape vines above many of the doors.
Residents of Bernkastel had to pay taxes on the area of land so houses were small at the bottom. Harry Potter’s little pointed house is 2m wide at the base.
Rich person’s house made of stone.
Poor person’s house made of wood.
Bears are one of the symbols for Bernkastel. Lobsters across the river and two keys – one for the city and one for heaven.
Bernkasteler Doctor – one of the most famous vineyards producing critic-acclaimed Riesling.

Team Wayne and Ann

Although a bit dreary, the views were spectacular.
White knuckles for Wayne – did not like the edge.
No stairs for Wayne
A lovely walk back to the town

We came back to the ship for a quick lunch and then Madonna took Wayne and me on the guided tour and we took her up to the castle.

Danny joined us to walk across the bridge. Mark and Donna had just done that walk.

So apt!

We all met and found an ice cream shop to have a beer and wine.

Mark, Wayne Madonna and I decided we would stay up after dinner and join the games night – ‘corn-hole’. After watching a number of guests practising and no offer of drinks, we decided that bed was a better option.

Faux pas of the day

Me pointing out to Madonna that ‘This is a tunnel’. As Wayne said, it was pretty obvious. In my defence, I thought she was deep in conversation with Wayne and hadn’t seen it!

For those of you who don’t know, this is a tunnel!
